Task Manager Lets you view the applications and processes running on your computer as well as information about process and memory performance, network activity, and user activity.
Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Ctrl+Shift+Esc Opens Task Manager.
System Configuration Utility (Msconfig.exe) Use this to find out what processes are launched at startup and to temporarily disable a process from loading. Icluded with Windows Vista and Xp but not Windows 2000.
Services.msc Launches Services console.
Computer Management (Compmgmt.msc) Is a window that consolidates several Windows administrative tools that you can use to manage the local PC or other computers on the network.
Microsoft Management Console MMC Is a Windows Utility that can be used to build your own customized console windows.
Console A single window that contains one or more administrative tools such as Device Manager or Disk Management.
Snap-ins In a console, individual tools.
Event Viewer (Eventvwr.msc) A Windows tool useful for troubleshooting problems with Windows, applications, and hardware.
Reliability and Performance Monitor Is a MMC snap-in, collects, records and displays events. Also called in Windows XP, Performance Monitor or the System Monitor.
Data Collector Sets Utility A Utility within the Reliability and Performance Monitor that is used to collect your own data about a system.
Registry Editor (regedit.exe) Windows Utility used to edit the Windows registry.
Registry A database designed with a treelike structure (called an hierarchical database) that contains configuration information for Windows, users, software applications, and installed hardware devices.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM) Most important key and contains hardware, software, and security data.
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG (HKCC) Key that contains Plug and Play information about the hardware configuration that is used by the computer at startup.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (HKCR) Key that stores information that determines which application is opened when the user double-clicks a file.
HKEY_USERS (HKU) Key that contains data about all users and is taken from the Default hive.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER (HKCU) Key that contains data about the current user.
Windows Experience Index In Windows Vista, is a summary index designed to measure the overall performance of a system.
Vista Upgrade Advisor An internet tool that can be run on a PC to determine if an XP system qualifies for Vista.
ReadyBoost Windows Vista Utility that uses a flash drive or secure digital (SD) memory card to boost hard drive performance.
Task Scheduler Offered with Home and Business Editions of Windows Vista and Windows XP Professional, a tool that can set a task or program to launch at a future time, including at startup.
Four ways to start Task Manager CTRL+ALT+DELETE, Right click a blank area on the task bar select Task Manager, CRTL+SHIFT+ESC, Enter (taskmgr.exe) in the Vista Start Search box or the XP Run dialog box.
