Employee A person who works for another and is rewarded with a wage or salary
Self employed A person who operates their own busniness and earns their income by selling goods and services
Pro-rata The percentage of a time worked by part-time workers in proportion to the wage they receive
Working age population All members of the Australian population who are 15 years and over
Labour force (workforce) The total number of people who are employed and those unemployed
Participation rate The labour force divided by the working age population as a percentage
Unemployment rate The total unemployed divided by the labour force
Award A set of minimum requirements which employers must follow when employing a person who fits into a certain category (award)
Austraian Workplace agreement (AWA) Individual agreements negotiated between an employer and an employee
Certified agreements An agreement negotiated between a group of employees and their employer
Rate of unemployment Members of the labour force who are unemployed and actively seeking employment
Structural unemployment People who are retrenched due to their skills no longer being needed as their work has been replaced by machines
Cyclical unemployment The level of unemployment which changes during boom and bust time
Frictional unemployment People who are temporarily unemployed due to moving between occupatioons or leaving school
Hidden unemployment People whom have given up on seeking employment
Seasonal unemployment The result of unemployment due to the seasonal nature of work e.g. fruit picking
Long-term unemployment People whom have been out of employment for at least 12 months
Hard-core unemployment People who are unsuitable for employment due to personal characteristics
WorkCover The division of the NSW government who aim to ensure that work places are healthy, productive and safe
Discrimination To exclude a person based on characteristics which a person possesses
Unlawful dismissal The fireing of someone in a manner which is against the law
Unfair dismissal The fireing of someone which is legal although unjust
Redundancy An employee loses their job as work is no longer available due to economic, technological and other reasons
Outsourcing The employment of another organisation to fulfill a role in yours
Piecework The payment method which a worker recieves work per item produced
Trade union An organisation who aims to improve the wages of workers, provide job security, gain better working conditions and benefits for its members
Stop Work Meeting Industrial action which workers refrain from performing their expected taks in order to achieve better circumstances
Go slow/work to regulation An industrial action where workers perform their work at a decreased pace in order to achieve better circumstances
Overtime ban A ban on working overtime imposed by the employee
Lockout The employer prevents any employee from entering the workplace
Black-list Making it difficult for the ringleaders of any industrial pursuit from obtaining other employment
Picket line A line of protesting employees which make it difficult for those not protesting to get into the workplace
Scabs Workers who work during a strike
