Classification of Tissues Part I

QuestionAnswer
Histology The study of tissues
Tissue Groups of cells that are similar in structure and function
Organs tissues organized to perform specific body functions; most contain several representatives of the primary tissues, and arrangement of these tissues determine the organ's structure and function
Epithelial tissue/epithelium covers surfaces such as external body surfaces, lines cavities and tubules; glands classified as epithelium as they are formed from epithelial membranes.
CRAPS Cellularity and specialized cells Regeneration Avascularity Polarity -Apical surface: near top - Basal surface: toward bottom Supported by connective tissue
Apical surface Free surface; near top
Basal surface Toward bottom; different from apical surface
Basement membrane Adhesive; amorphous material secreted partly by the epithelial cells and connective tissue cells that lie adjacent to each other
Basal lamina epithelial cells
Reticular lamina Connective Tissue Cells
Simple Squamous E.T. Function: Diffusion and filtration Location: Air sacs of lungs
Stratified Squamous E.T. Function: Protection Location: Non-keratinzed-mouth; Keratinzed-skin
Simple Cubodial E.T. Function: Secretion and absorption Location: Kidney tubules
Stratified Cubodial E.T. Function: Protection Location: Salivary glands
Simple Columnar E.T. Function: Absorption and Secretion Location: Non-ciliated-digestive tract; ciliated-small bronchi
Stratified Columnar E.T. Function: Protection and secretion Location: Rare in body; male urethra
Pseudostratified Columnar E.T. Function: Secretion Location: Non-ciliated-sperm carrying ducts; ciliated-trachea
Transtional E.T. Function: Stretches readily Location: lines bladder
Goblet Cells Secrete mucus
Absorption Active or passive uptake of gases, fluids, or solutes
Secretion Discharge of specialized hormones or other chemicals that either protect outside (exocrine) or sends messages via interstitial fluid (endocrine).
Protection Epithelia protect exposed and internal surfaces from abrasion dehydration, and destruction.
Diffusion Passive molecular movement from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Filtration Movement of fluid across a membrane whose pores restrict the passage of solutes on the basis of size.
Skeletal Muscle Description: Multinucleate cells Function: Voluntary movement & locomotion Location: Attached to bones
Striations Obvious stripes
Multinucleate Several nuclei per cell
Cardiac Muscle Description: Branching, uninucleate Function: Involuntary, propels blood Location: Walls of the heart
Intercalated Disks Juctions that allow cardica muscles to fit together
Smooth Muscle Description: Arranged closely to form sheets Function: Propel objects (i.e. babies); involuntary Location: Mostly walls of hollow organs
Involuntary Cannot voluntarily or consciously control
Voluntary Consciously control

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
