Chapter6.1

QuestionAnswer
Rock A naturally occuring solid mixture of one or more minerals and organic matter
Mineral Naturally formed inorganic solid that has a crystalline structure.
Composition The chemical makeup of the rock;describes either the minerals or other materials in the rock.
Texture The quality of a rock that is based on the sizes, shapes, and positions of the rock's grains.
What are the four physical properties of minerals? Color, hardness, density, and the way that the mineral breaks.
How do the igneous rocks form? These rocks form when hot, liquid rock-called magma-cools either slowly or rapidly to form mineral crystals.
Explain how the rate of cooling of magma affects the texture of igneous rocks. The slower it cools the coarseer t he rock, the faster it cools the finer the rocks.
How do metamorphic rocks form? These rocks form when teperature and pressure change one type of rock into another type.
How do sedimentary rocks form? These rocks form when rock or mineral fragments are cemented together, when minerals crystalize out of a solution to become rock, or when the remains of once-living organisms become rock.
What is intrusive igneous rock? Rocks that form deep inside earth.
What is extrusive igneous rock? Rocks that form from lava that has erupted at earth's surface.
What are foliated metamorphic rocks? Rocks that contain grains of different minerals to form bands or layers and have a banded texture.
What are nonfloiated metamorphic rocks? Rocks that contain grains of one mineral and do not form bands or layers.
What are clastic sedementary rocks? Rocks made of grains of rock or minerals called sediment that form when sediments are buried, squeezed together, and cemented by minerals.
What are chemical sedementary rocks? Rocks that form when minerals crystalize out of a solution to become rock.
What are organic sedementary rocks? Rocks that form when shells and skeletons of dead marine organisms are buried and cemented by calcite or quartz.
