Cultural Influences on Nursing care

Culture Socially transmitted behavior patterns, beliefs, values, customs, arts, and all other characteristics of people that guide their world view
PRIMARY characteristics of Diversity nationality, race, skin color, gender, age, and regligous affiliation.
SECONDARY characteristics of diversity socioeconomic status, education, occupation, military experience, political beliefs, length of time away from the country of orgin, urban verses rural residence, parental status, physical characteristics, sexual orientation, gender issues.

Traditional Health care practitioners Shamans, herbalists, other traditional healers
Communication styles (verbal) spoken language, dialects, voice volumne
Communication styles (nonverbal) use of eye contact, perception of time, and physical closeness when talking
American Indians / Alaskan Natives herbs used to cleanse body of evil spirits and poison, nontraditional diets tend to be high in fat, Diet lacks fruits and vegetables on reservations
European-Americans Nutrition Diets tend to be high in fat and sodium, only group to use the food pyrimid, Believe a balanced diet promotes a healthy body.
African-Americans Nutrition many lactose intolerant, food is a symbol of wealth and health
Hispanics/Latinos Nutrition food to be served warm, not to hot, not to cold. subscribe to the hot-and-cold theory, many are lactose intolerant.
Asians Communication styles Many dialects, with 55 in china alone. loud talking is considered rude, nonverbal communication, reluctant to maintain eye contact with elders or superiors.
Arab-Americans well defined gender roles, very protective of children, elders are respected
Appalachians Many deny anger and tend not to complain, direct eye contact from strangers percieved as aggression or hostility.
