QuestionAnswer
the smallest particle of an element that still retains the properties of the element. Atom
The total number of protons in an atom's nucleus. Atomic Number
The weighted-average mass of the mixture of an element's isotopes. Average Atomic Mass
Particles surrounding the center of an atom that have a charge of 1-. Electrons
The area around the nucleus of an atom where the atom's electrons are most likely to be found. Electron Cloud
Uses the symbol for an element that uses dots representing the number of electrons in the element's outer most energy level. Electron Dot Diagram
Vertical column in the periodic table. Group
Atoms of the same element that have different number of neutrons. Isotopes
The sum of all the number of protons and neutrons in an atoms nucleus. Mass number
Neutral particle, composed of quarks, inside the nucleus of an atom. Neutron
The postively charged center of an atom that contains protons and neutrons and is surrounded by a cloud of electrons. Nucleus
A horizontal row in the periodic table. Period
An organized list of all the known elements that are arranged by increasing atomic number and by changes in chemical and physical properties. Periodic Table
A particle, composed of quarks inside the nucleus of an atom that has the charge of 1 +. Proton
Particles of matter that make up protons and neutrons. Quark
A compound that is composed of two elements. Binary Compound
A force that holds atoms together in a compound. Chemical Bond
The chemical shorthand that uses symbols to tell what elements are in a compound and their ratios. Chemical Formula
An attraction formed between atoms when they share electrons. Covalent Bonds
A compound that has water chemically attached to its ions and written into its chemical formula. Hydrate
A charged particle that has either more or fewer electrons than protons. Ion
An attraction between oppositely charged ions in an ionic compound. Ionic Bond
A neutral particle that forms as a result of electron sharing. Molecule
A molecule that shares electrons equally and does not have oppositely charged ends. Nonpolar Molecule
The positive and negative numbers that indicate how many electrons an atom has gained, lost, or shared to become stable. Oxidation Number
They are positively or negatively charged, covalently bonded group of atoms. Polyatomic Ion
A molecule with a slightly positive end and a slightly negative end as a result of electrons being shared unequally. Polar Molecule

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
