parts of speech

4 levels vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
noun A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
verb A word that shows action, being, or links a subject to a subject complement.
pronoun A word that takes the place of a noun.
adjective A word that modifies, or describes, a noun or pronoun.
adverb A word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
interjection A word that shows emotion but has no grammatical function.
conjunction A word that joins two words or two groups of words.
preposition A word that shows a relationship between its object and another word in the sentence.
clause A group of words that contains a subject and its predicate.
prepositional phrase A group of words beginning with a preposition
subject The noun or subject pronoun that the sentence is about.
gerund A noun made from an –ing verb
participle An adjective made out of a verb
predicate The verb and other words that are about the subject.
infinitive A noun or modifier made from the to- form of the verb
independent clause A group of words that expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence
indirect object A noun or object pronoun that is indirectly affected by the action verb, and that is located between the action verb and the direct object.
dependent clause A group of words that does NOT express a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence (usually begins with a subordinating conjunction)
direct object A noun or object pronoun that receives the action of the action verb.
subject complement A noun, subject pronoun, or adjective that is linked to the subject by a linking verb and tells more about the subject.
verbal A verb form used as a different part of speech
appositive A word or phrase that identifies or renames a noun or a pronoun that comes right before it
phrase A group of words without a subject and its predicate (acts like a single part of speech)
