Newborn death Expired infant that has shown signs of life at the time of birth, born in the hospital, and dies during the same admission.
Neonatal death (newborn within 4wks) Expired newborn right before reached 28 days of age
Outpatient death Expired patient during outpatient care. Do not include: IP deaths, ED deaths, Dead on arrival,Hospital fetal death (stillborn/abortion)
Mortality Rates Measures risk of death for the cause under study for a specific population. Includes all IP deaths. Not include outpatients and outpatient deaths.
Gross Rates When used statistically refers to the amount before anything is subtracted.
Gross death rate # of IP deaths, during a given period, divided by the total number of IP discharges, including all deaths for the same period
Formula for Gross Death Rate Numerator: Total # of all IP deaths (including NB)for the period. Denominator: Total # of all IP discharges (including NB)for the period.
Net Rates Net: Refers to the amount after something is subtracted. Net death rate excludes deaths that occur less than 48 hours from admission. Institutional death rate. Excludes deaths within 48 hours to reflect the hospital's ability to save lives.
Net Death Rate Total # of IP deaths (including adult, children, NB). Minus the deaths < 48 hrs after admission for a periodX100. Divided by the total # of IN discharges (including adults, children, NB). Minus # of deaths < 48 hrs after admission, for the same .
Net Death Rate Formula Numerator: Total # of all IP deaths, (including NB). Minus > 48 hrs, for the period X 100. Denominator: Total # of all IP discharges(deaths) (include NB). Minus deaths > 48 hrs for the period
Newborn Death Rate Formula Numerator: Total # of NB deaths for the period X 100.Denominator: Total # of NB discharges including deaths, for the period.
Postoperative Death Rate # of deaths occurring after a surgical operation: Referred to as surgical death rate> Occur within 10 days post-operative. Divided the # of patients operated on. Carried out at least two decimal places. Generally less than on percent.
Anesthesia Death Rate Ratio of deaths caused by anesthetic agents during a specified period to the # of anesthetics administered.
Anesthesia Death Rate Formula Total # of deaths caused by anesthetic agents X 100. Divided by the total # of anesthetics administered.
Net Death is the same as Institutional Death
