subduction zone an area where the edge of one plate moves under another plate at a convergent boundary
buckling zone an area where plates push against each other making large folds in the rock
divergent boundary a boundary where two plates are moving way from each other
diverge to move away from each other
rift zone a valley that is caused as two continental plates diverge
transform boundary a boundary where two plates are moving sideways along each other’s edge
trench an Earth structure formed at a convergent boundary when an oceanic plate moves under another plate, with long, steep sides and a deep depression
rifting surface cracking that occurs at a divergent boundary beneath continental crust
rift valley a valley formed when the thin crust between spreading plates sinks
basaltic magma a type of magma with low silica content and high temperatures that erupts as thin, runny lava flows and cools to form hard, black volcanic rock
andesitic magma a type of magma with high silica content and low temperatures that erupts as thicker, slow-moving lava and cools to form gray to black volcanic rocks.
radioactive dating measuring the steady, constant rate of decay of radioactive elements in rock to determine the absolute age of the rock
radioactive elements a chemical element whose atoms occasionally change into atoms of other chemical elements, giving off energy in the process
geologic time scale the arrangement of geologic events in the order they happened, based on the fossil record and the order in which rocks are found
plate tectonics the theory that the lithosphere is divided into a number of plates, and the study of how the plates move and interact with one another
