Urinary System

Definitions

Void also known as urine or pee.
Bladder is a hollow; muscular sac that lies behind the symphysis pubis and at the mid-line of the pelvic cavity.
Bowman's Capsule substances filtered out in the glomerulus enter the next section of the nephron, the Bowman's Capsule.
Cortex is the outer section of the kidney, it contains most of the nephrons, which aid in the production of urine.
Excretory system is responsible for removing certain wastes and excess from the body and for maintaining the body's acid-base balance.
Glomerulus the first part of the nephron,and a cluster of capillaries.
Hilium a notched or indented area through which the ureter,nerves,blood vessels, and lymph vessels enter and leave the kidney.
Kidneys are two bean shaped organs located on either side of the vertebral column, behind the upper part of the abdominal cavity, and seperated from this cavity by the peritoneum.
Medulla is the inner section of the kidney.
Nephrons are microscopic filtering units located in the kidneys.
Renal Pelvis a funnel-shaped structure which is the first section of the ureter.
Ureters are two muscular tubes approximately 10to12 inches in length.
Urethra is the tube that carries the urine from the bladder to the outside.
Urinary Meatus the external opening.
Urinary System is responsible for removing certain wastes.
Urine is the liquid waste product produced by the urinary system. It is approximately 95% water.
Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder.
Glomerulonephritis is an inflammation of the kidney tissue and renal pelvis.
Pyelonephritis is an inflammation of the kidney tissue and renal pelvis.
Renal Calculus is a kidney stone.
Renal Faliure when kidneys stop functioning.
Uremia is a toxic condidtion that occurs when the Kidenys fail and urinary waste products are present in the bloodstream.
Urethritis inflammation of the urethra.
