What is Leadership? • The influence that particular individuals exert on the goals achievement of others in an organizational context o Enhancing productivity, innovation, satisfaction and commitment on the workforce
Strategic Leadership leadership that involves the ability to anticipate, envision, maintain flexibility, think strategically, and work with others to initiate changes that will create a viable future for the organization
Informal Leader do not have formal authority, thus they rely on being liked and being perceived as highly skilled to exert influence.
Leadership Trait Theory • Although some traits appear to be related to leadership, there are several reasons why the trait approach is not the best means of understanding and improving leadership o Difficult to distinguish whether the traits make the leader, or the situations
Consideration and Initiating Structures • Consideration is more related to employee motivation, job satisfaction and leader effectiveness while initiating structure is more related to job performance and group performance
Fiedler's Contingency Theory and Cognitive Resource Theory Fred Fiedler’s theory that states that the association between leadership orientation and group effectiveness is contingent on how favourable the situation is for exerting influence
House's Path-Goal Theory Robert house’s theory concerned with the situations under which various leader behaviours (directive, supportive, participative, achievement-oriented) are most effective
Descriptive Behaviour schedule work, maintain performance standards and let employees know what is expected of them; essentially identical to the initiating structure approach
Supportive Behaviour supportive leaders are friendly, approachable and concerned with their employees; essentially identical to consideration
Participative Behaviour participative leaders consult with employees about work-related matters and consider options
Achievement- Oriented Behaviour encourage employees to exert high effort and strive for a high level of goal accomplishment, They express confidence that employees can reach these goals
Transactional Leadership leadership that is based on a straightforward relationship between the leader and the follower; employees perform well, and the leader rewards them; contingent reward behaviour
Transformational Leadership leadership that provides followers with a new vision that instills true commitment; intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, inspirational motivation, charisma
