Changing States of Matter
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is a physical change? | A change in which the form of a substance changes, but the substance still has the same chemical makeup. |
What is density? | The measure of how closely packed an object's atoms are. |
What is a mixture? | A combination of two or more different substances. |
What is a solution? | A mixture in which all the parts are mixed evenly. |
How are melting and freezing points different? | Melting is a change of state from solid to liquid. Freezing is a change of state from liquid to solid. |
How are condensing and boiling alike? | They occur at the same temperature |
How can solid dry ice be made from carbon dioxide gas? | By making it very cold. |
What are snow and frost? | Solid forms of water. |
How do melting points of snow and frost compare with the melting point of ice? | They are the same. |
How are deposition and sublimation alike? | Both are changes in state between a solid and a gas without going throught the liquid state. |
How are melting a freezing alike? | Both involve a change of state between a solid and a liquid. |
How are condensing and boling different? | Condensing is a change in state from gas to liquid. Boiling is the opposite--from liquid to gas. |
What is sand combined with water? | A mixture |
What is sugar combined with water? | A solution |
What is another way that sugar can be separated from water? | The mixture can be separated by leaving it in a warm place. The water evaporates, leaving the sugar in the container. |
What is the easiest way to separate a water and sand mixture? | By using some sort of filter. |
How is a solution different from a mixture? | A solution is one kind of mixture. All the parts are mixed evenly in a solution. |
How are all physical changes alike? | Physical changes affect the form of a substance but do not change the chemical make up (composition) of the substance. |
