Browser | A computer program used to view Web pages. Web pages are accessed through a browser using a URL. Common Web browsers are INTERNET EXPLORER and NETSCAPE. |
Censorship | to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable |
Cookie | When you visit a web site, that web site can store information about you on YOUR computer. Then, the next time you visit the web site, it can access the previous information it collected on you and use it to enhance your web site experience |
Copyright | Copyright is a protection that covers published and unpublished literary, scientific and artistic works, whatever the form of expression, provided such works are fixed in a tangible or material form. |
Distance learning | A type of education, typically college-level, where students work on their own at home. |
Ethics | the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation |
Fair use laws | : Fair use is a legal principle that defines the limitations on the exclusive rights** of copyright holders. |
Favorites | A list of your favorite Internet sites. It allows you to go back to that site easily with a click of your mouse |
Freeware | Freeware (not to be confused with free software) is programming that is offered at no cost and is a common class of small applications available for downloading and use in most operating systems. |
Hacker | Hacker is a term used by some to mean "a clever programmer" and by others, especially journalists or their editors, to mean "someone who tries to break into computer systems." |
Home Page | The page that initially displays when you search different sites. |
HTML | Hypertext Markup Language – A special language that uses tags (commands) to tell the browser how to display the text |
HTTP | Hypertext Transfer Protocol – Internet formatting rules |
Hyperlink | A text or graphic that you can click on to move from one document to another document on the WWW |
Information Superhighway | Another name for the internet or World Wide Web |
Internet | The general term used to describe the connection of hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide. |
Intranet | A network based on TCP/IP protocols (an internet) belonging to an organization, usually a corporation, accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization |
Modem | Short for modulator-demodulator. A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines. |
Online | Turned on and connected. For example, printers are online when they are ready to receive data from the computer |
Public domain | Programs that are uncopyrighted because their authors intended to share them with everyone else are in the public domain. |
Search Engines | Internet sites designed to assist the user in locating information about a particular topic. |
Shareware | Shareware is software that is distributed free on a trial basis with the understanding that the user may need or want to pay for it later |
Surfing the Net | Moving around from one link or document to another, exploring different Web pages on different servers. |
Telecommunications | Refers to all types of data transmission, from voice to video. |
URL | This stands for Universal Resource Locator. It is the particular Internet address of a Web page. |
World Wide Web (WWW) | The term used for the method of accessing and storing documents on the Internet. |
