MOPs Processing Mail Terms

Electronic Mail Processing A computerized system for sorting mail based on strict U.S. Postal envelope addressing standards.
Enclosure A supplemental item inserted in an envelope with a written communication.
Facsimile Mail An electronic process for transmitting written communications.
Letter Sorting Machine (LSM) A semi-mail system of sorting mail.
Mail Classification A mail service determnation based on content, weight destination and speed of delivery.
Optical Character Reader (OCR) A piece of electronic equipment designed to speed sorting and delivery of mail.
Postal Manual A book containing the rules and regulations that govern the postal service.
Registered Mail A first-class service that provides, for a fee, a record that mail has been sent and guarantees an indemnity if it is not received.
United Parcel Service (UPS) A national package delivery service.
Zone Improvement Plan A system of numerical codes written on envelopes to facilitate the delivery of mail.
