| literary nonfiction | like fiction, except that the characters, setting, and plot are real rather than imaginary (ex. autobiographies, biographies, and essays) |
| mood | feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for the reader |
| moral | lesson taught in a literary work, such as fable (ex. Don't count your chickens before they hatch) |
| multiple meanings | meaning of a word dependent upon how it is used in a sentence |
| myth | traditional story that deals with basic questions about the universe |
| nonfiction | writing that tells about real people, places, and events |
| orgainzational patterns | text structures (ex. chronological order, compare/contrast, cause/effect) |
| paraphrasing | restating information in their own words |
| perspective | position from which something is considered or evaluated; standpoint |
| plot | action or sequence of events in a story |
| point of view | the vantage point from which a writer tells a story (ex. omniscient, third-person limited, first person) |
