QuestionAnswer
consumer documents printed materials that accompany products and services
context clues words or phrases surrounding an unfamiliar word (ex. definition, synonym, exampel, comparison or contrast, or other expression to help the reader infer the word's meanings
definition/explanation organizational pattern that is devoted to defining a complex term or idea; initially defined and then expanded with examples, explanations, and restatements
descriptive language language used to create a mood, person, place, thing, event, emotion, or experience (examples are imagery, alliteration, and mood)
diction a writer's or speaker's choice of words and way of arranging the words in sentences. Can be formal or informal, technical or common, abstract or concrete, and literal or figurative.
drawing conclusions inference that involves not reading between the lines but reading beyond the lines
evaluate form opinions about what is read
excerpt passage or segment taken from a text; may be a sentence, paragraph, or chapter
expostition the start of the plot; sets the tone, setting, introduces the characters, and provides background information
external conflict character struggles against an outside force which may be another character, society, or something in nature
fact knowledge or information that can be verified
falling action part of the plot that occurs after the climax; conflicts are resolved and mysteries are solved
