| author's bias | a person's judgment either for or against a particular person, position, or thing |
| author's perspective | the viewpoint that an author brings to a piece of writing |
| author's purpose | an author's reason for creating a particular work (ex. explain, inform, express an opinion, persuade) |
| base word | complete word that can stand alone; affixes may be added to it |
| character development | method used by a writer to create and develop characters- author may describe appearance; use speech, thoughts, feelings, or actions of characters; direct comments about a character |
| character point of view | viewpoint or voice of a character which enables readers to better understand the events of a text through a character's thoughts, feelings, beliefs, motives, or actions |
| chart | a graphic aid that presents information, shows a process, or makes comparisons, usually in rows and columns |
| chronological order | the order in which events happen in time |
| conflict | struggle or clash between opposing charcters, forces, or emotions that moves the plot forward in a literary text |
