Artificial Satellite Any human-made object placed in orbit around a body in space.
Name three kinds of artificial satellites. Weather satellites, communication satellites, and remote-sensing satellites.
What do weather satellites do? Provide continuous updates on the movement of gases in the atmosphere so that we can predict weather on Earth's surface.
What do communication satellites do? Relay TV programs, phone calls and computer data.
What do remote-sensing satellites do? Monitor changes in the environment.
What is the name of the first artificial satellite and who was it launched by? Sputnik 1; The Soviets (Russia) in 1957.
What artificial satellite carried the first living being into space and what was the being? Sputnik 2; A dog named Laika.
What was the name of the US first satellite and when was it launched? Explorer 1 in 1958.
Low earth orbit An orbit that is less than 1,500 km above Earth's surface.
Geostationary orbit An orbit that is about 36,000 km above Earths surface and in which a satellite is above a fixed spot on the equator.
How does a satellite in GEO move? It travels in an orbit that exactly matches Earths rotation and is always above the same spot on Earth.
How does a satellite in LEO move? It moves around earth very quickly and can provide clear images of Earth.
