Douglas-Ocean Floor

Continental Shelf | Part of the continent found under the water; edges drop gently down from the shore |
Continental Slope | steep slope or drop from the shelf to the bottom of the ocean floor; the depth increases greatly here |
Mid-Ocean Ridge | a central mountain range under the ocean that divides the ocean floor into 2 parts; a row of underwater volcanic mountains are found here |
Rift Zone | located in the highest part of the mid-ocean ridge is a narrow trench; underwater volcanoes erupt here adding mountains to either side of the MOR |
Seamounts | volcanoes formed on the ocean floor (basin) but they are NOT part of the mid-ocean ridge |
Trenches | where steep-sided canyons and deep narrow valleys are found in the deepest part of the ocean floor (deeper than any valley found on land) |
Ocean Basin | found on both sides of the mid-ocean ridge made of low hills and flat plains |
Abyssal Plain | the flattest area of the ocean basin where seamounts can form |
