The envelope of gases that surrounds Earth. ATMOSPHERE
A form of oxygen that has three oxygen atoms instead of the usual two. OZONE
Water in the form of a gas. WATER VAPOR
The amount of mass of a substance in a given volume. DENSITY
The force pushing on an area or surface. PRESSURE
The pressure caused by the weight of a column of air pushing down on an area. AIR PRESSURE
An instrument used to measure changes in air pressure. BAROMETER
An instrument that measures changes in air pressure, consisting of a glass tube partially filled with mercury, with its open end resting in a dish of mercury. MERCURY BAROMETER
An instrument that measures changes in air pressure without using a liquid. ANEROID BAROMETER
Elevation above sea level. ALTITUDE
The lowest layer; the layer in which Earth's weather occurs. TROPOSPHERE
The second layer of the atmosphere; contains the ozone layer. STRATOSPHERE
Middle layer of the atmosphere; protects the Earth's surface from being hit by most meteoroids. MESOSPHERE
Outermost layer of the atmosphere; extends outward into space. THERMOSPHERE
The lower part of the thermosphere. IONOSPHERE
The outer layer of the thermosphere. EXOSPHERE
A substance that causes pollution. POLLUTANT
A brownish haze that is a mixture of ozone and other chemicals, formed when pollutants react with each other in the presence of sunlight. PHOTOCHEMICAL SMOG
Rain that contains more acid than normal. ACID RAIN
