Question | Answer |
---|---|
Frost wedging | Occurs when water that is in a crack freezes and expands and causes parts of the rock to brake off. |
Exfoliation | Occurs when parts of the top layer of a rock become loose and comes off because of pressure and temperature changes. |
Crystal Growth | Occurs when salt grains grow in between other minerals so that they are pushed away from each other. |
Tree Roots | Tree roots that are wedged in rocks can grow and break that rock apart. |
Oxidation | Known as rusting and occurs when rocks and minerals are exposed to oxygen causing it to crumble. This change can be faster in places with high moisture and temperature. |
Living Organisms | Lichen attach themselves to rocks and release an acid that dissolves the rock. The minerals that are broken down off of the rock are used as food by the lichen. |
Water | Weathers the rock by dissolving it, when it mixes with the water is creates a solution. |
Carbon Dioxide | CO2 can dissolve the rainwater creating an acid called carbonic acid that weathers the rocks as it comes down. |
