Definitions for maps and globes quiz

hemisphere Half of the globe
equator The imaginary line that divides the Northern and Southern hemisphere. Exactly half way between the north and south poles
latitude The imaginary grid lines that go horizontal from the equator around the earth.
longitude The imaginary grid lines that go from the north pole to the south pole.
continents The 7 largest bodies of land on the Earth.
oceans The largest bodies of water on Earth.
symbols Small pictures used in a key to represent places and things on a map.
degrees The longitudinal and latitudinal measurements to mark places on the Earth
legend The table on a map listing the symbols used
scale A key on a map that tells you the distance compared to real life. Example: 1 inch = 1 mile
cardinal The directions of North, South, East, and West
intermediate The directions between the 4 cardinal directions. Example Northeast or Southwest
boundary The imaginary line that is the border between 2 places or things.
grid Imaginary lines that help you find coordinates on a map
key A box on a map that shows the symbols of the places and things on the map
Prime Meridian the longitudinal line that is on the opposite side of the world from the international dateline.
