Basic Excel Terms

Remains the same when the formula is copied. ABSOLUTE CELL REFERENCE
Cell surrounded by a black border, ready to receive data. ACTIVE CELL
The symbols /, *, -, and + used to denote division, multiplication, subtraction and addition. ARITHMETIC OPERATOR
Extends values into adjacent cells based on the values of selected cells. AUTO FILL
Another term for the Sum function. AUTO SUM
The small box formed by the intersection of a column and a row. CELL
The identification of a specific cell by its intersecting column letter and row number. CELL REFERENCE
A vertical group of cells in a worksheet COLUMN
Inserts thousand comma separators COMMA STYLE
The background color of a cell FILL COLOR
The small black square in the lower right corner of a selected cell. FILL HANDLE
An equation that performs mathematical calculations on values in a worksheet FORMULA
An element in the Excel window that displays the value or formula contained in the active cell FORMULA BAR
A predefined formula that performs calculations by using specific values in a particular order. FUNCTION
A specific way in which Excel displays numbers in a cell NUMBER FORMAT
The symbols with which you can sepcify the type of calculation you want to perform in an Excel formula. OPERATORS
The technique of constructing a formula by pointing to and then clicking cells. POINT AND CLICK METHOD
Two or more selected cells on a worksheet that are adjacent or nonadjacent RANGE
In a formula, the address of a cell based on the relative position of the cell that contains the formula and the cell referred to. RELATIVE CELL REFERENCE
A horizontal group of cells in a worksheet ROW
Another name for a worksheet SPREADSHEET
A predefined formula that adds all the numbers in a selected range of cells. SUM
Another name for a constant value. VALUE
Pre-written formulas that analyze a group of measurements. STATISTICAL FUNCTIONS
A statisitical function that determines the largest value in a group of values. MAX FUNCTION
A statisitical function that determines the smallest value in a group of values. MIN FUNCTION
A sorting order that arranges text in reverse alphabetical (Z to A) order or numbers from the highest to the lowest number. DECENDING ORDER
A sorting order arranges text in alphabetical order (A to Z) or numbers from the lowest to highest number. ASCENDING ORDER
The process of arranging data in a specific order based on the value in each field SORTING
