What are health disparities? the differences in measures of health status between different groups of people living in a community, a state, or the entire nation
When does health disparities occur? when one group of people has a higher incidence or mortality rate than another group
What are one of the contributing factors to health desparities? health care provider attitudes and behaviors
Minority adults are more likely to? have health problems than whites
racial, ethinic, and cultural differences exist in? health screening, treatments, and access to health care providers
What is also influenced by race and ethnic? disease risk and outcomes
What is communication issues? not understanding, feeling they are not listened to, or having questions but not asking them
What is the tuskegee experiment? 399 African americans infected with syphilis were followed

Rural populations have? lower literacy rates and poorer health

What is health literacy? a range of skills needed to prevent disease and promote health

What can affect health care seeking behavior in minority populations? stereotyping and prejudice
What is stereotyping? viewing members of a specific culture or ethnic goup as being alike or sharing the same beleifs
When does discrimination occur? where there is a negative treatment based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, or sexual orientation
Economic issues often dictate? health care delivery
What can ultimatly eliminate health disparities? interpersonal communication, disease management standards, increasing cultural competence, initiating quality imporvement
What are interpersonal skills? active listening, relationship building, and communication skills
The use of standardized evidence based care guidelinces can? reduce disparities in diagnosis and treatment
Research shows that pt's are more comfortable when care is provided by? someone who shares their heritage and cultural values
What is needed to assist in recognizing and responding to the health needs of diverse populations? a diverse nursing workforce
