2nd Poetry Terms

In poetry, there are many types of Figurative Lnaguage used for effect The 3 most common "figures of speech" are Simile, Metaphor and Personification. Others include Onomatopoeia, Hyperbole, Imagery, Alliteration etc...
There are many techniques poets use to achieve different sounds 3 of the most common are rhyme, rhythm and repetition
Rhyme when words end in the same sound
Rhythm sometimes referred to as the beat of the poem. It is a pattern of stressed and unstressed syllable
Repetition Poets often choose to repeat sounds, words, and phrases or whole lines in a poem. Repetition helps the poet emphasize and idea or create a certain feeling
There are many different types of poems such as ballads, epics, free verse, concrete etc...
Free Verse Poems that do not have a regular rhythm and they sound more like conversation
Genre The term used to identify the major categories of literature. There are 5 major categories of literature: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama and folklore
Character a person or animal who takes part in a literary work
Protagonist main character
Antagonist the person who opposes or competes with the main character
Characterization the technique a writer uses to create and develop a character;
Direct Characterization author states the traits
Indirect Characterization reader must draw conclusions from what is written about
Setting the time and place of a literary work
Plot sequence of events in a work of fiction
conflict opposing elements or characters in a plot
Four Types of Conflict Internal = Man vs. himself External = Man vs. Man External= Man vs. nature External = Man vs. society
Theme the message about life or human nature communicated by a work of literature (in most cases the reader will infer the theme)
Symbol a word or object that stands for something else
