Chapter 8 Vocabulary

capacity The amount that can be held in a container.
Celsius The metric measure of temperature.
centimeter A metric unit of length. One centimeter equals one-hundredth of a meter.
cup A customary unit of capacity equal to 8 fluid ounces.
degrees The measure of temperature.
elapsed time The amount of time that has passed from beginning to end.
Fahrenheit The customary measure of temperature.
fluid ounce A customary unit of capacity.
foot A customary unit of length equal to 12 inches.
gallon A customary unit of capacity equal to 4 quarts.
gram A metric unit of mass. One gram equals one-thousandth of a kilogram.
inch A customary unit of length. Twelve inches equal one foot.
kilogram The base unit of mass in the metric system. One kilogram equals one thousand grams.
kilometer A metric unit of length. One kilometer equals one thousand meters.
liter The basic unit of capacity in the metric system.
mass The amount of material an object contains.
meter The base unit of length in the metric system. One meter equals one-thousandth of a kilometer.
metric system A decimal system of weights and measures.
mile A customary unit of length equal to 5,280 feet, or 1,760 yards.
milligram A metric unit of mass. One milligram equals one-thousandth of a gram.
milliliter A metric unit of capacity. One milliliter equals one-thousandth of a liter.
millimeter A metric unit of length. One millimeter equals one-thousandth of a meter.
ounce A customary unit of weight. 16 ounces equals one pound.
pint A customary unit of capacity equal to two cups.
pound A customary unit of weight equal to 16 ounces.
quart A customary unit of capacity equal to two pints.
temperature The measure of the hotness or coldness of an object or environment.
ton A customary unit of length equal to 2,000 pounds.
yard A customary unit of length equal to 3 feet, or 36 inches.
