elevation | vertical distance measure above sea level |

plateau | large, nearly level area of land that is lifted or elevated above the surrounding area |
limestone | mostly smooth rocks, with fine-grain texture that contain calcite (and react to hydrochloric acid by fizzing to release carbon dioxide) |
sandstone | rocks with sandy, rough texture that do NOT react to hydrochloric acid |
correlation (correlate) | the relationship or connection between rock layers from two or more locations (rocks that are connected or RELATE) |
calcite | mineral compased of calcium, carbon and oxygen; this is the material in rocks that reacts to acid |
shale | smooth-textured rock that contains fossils |
sample | small, representative pieces |
layers | flat deposits of rock that can be thick or thin and extend over a large area |
