Hepatitis types A-E

hepatitis A virus (HAV) | short-lived infection (not chronic) caused by exposure to water or food contaminated with feces from people who have HAV Infectious hepatitis Get an A in handwashing and you prevent it Vaccine available |
hepatitis B virus (HBV) | acute infection (can recover completely) may be asymptomatic, but person is still a carrier and can infect others You Be getting HBV from Blood, sexual activity, breast milk serum hepatitis vaccine available |
hepatitis C virus (HCV) | begins acute, turns chronic exposure to blood or contaminated needles Is not transmitted by sex or breast milk can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer no vaccine C is very serious! |
hepatitis D virus (HDV) | secondary infection caused by a mutated hepatitis virus Develops in patients who already have hepatitis B. Known as Delta hepatitis You can't get D without having B |
hepatitis E virus (HEV) | similar to hepatitis A but rarely occurs in the U.S. A&E are the same (like the channel!) |
