QuestionAnswer
simile figure of speech that compares two unlike items using a comparing word such as "like" or "as"
metaphor figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike items
personification figure of speech in which an animal, object, or idea is described as having human form or characteristics
hyperbole boldly exaggerated statement that adds emphasis without intending to be literally true. It may be used for serious, comic, or ironic effect.
symbolism person, object, image, word, or event that evokes a range of additional meaning beyond its literal meaning
allusion reference in a work of literature to an character, place, or situation from another work of literature, music, or art
imagery collection of sense images in a poem or story- the author uses colors, sounds, and other sensations
idiom an expresion that does not have a literal meaning
onomatopoeia the use of a word or phrase that actually imitates or suggests the sound of what it describes
alliteration repeating of consonant sounds, most often at the beginnings of words
assonance repeating of vowel sounds, especially ina line of poetry
rhyme repetition of accented vowel sounds and succeeding consonant sounds including end rhyme and internal rhyme
