Atmosphere, Weather and Climate Review Sheet

QuestionAnswer
What is the difference between isobars and isotherms? Isobars is line on a weather map that connects points of equal air pressure and isotherm is a line on a weather map that connects points of same temperatures.
What kind of weather is associated with a high and a low pressure system? High pressure clears the cloud and low pressure makes more cloud and rain.
What is a warm front and the symbol for it on a weather map? Warm air goes up the cold air and a warm front is formed. Reason: Warm air is less dense. Symbol on page 82.
What is a cold front and the symbol for it on a weather map? Cold air pushes the warm air up and a cold front is formed. Reason: Cold air is more dense. Symbol on page 82.
What is an occluded front and the symbol for it on a weather map? Occluded front is where 2 cold front meets and pushes and make the warm air rise. Symbol on page 82.
What is precipitation and what are examples? Precipitation are forms of water that falls from the atmosphere. For example: rain, snow, sleet, and hail.
What form of water is a gas, liquid and solid? (water vapor, ice, ocean water) Gas - Water Vapor Liquid - Ocean Water Solid - Ice
Describe what is happening in the picture below using the words evaporation condensation and precipitation Part A - Evaporation Part B - Condensation Part C - Precipitation
Are continental polar air masses warm or cold and dry or moist? Cold and dry.
What do meteorologists study? They study the current weather and weather patterns.
What is humidity and how does it change with temperature? How does this explain dew point? Humidity is the amount of water in the air, or water vapor. It explains dew point because dew point is when the water vapor turns back into liquid at a certain temperature.
What is fog? Clouds near the ground.
What is the difference between a hurricane and tornado? Hurricanes are large, rotating storms with strong winds that form over water. The water is warm and the air is moist. Tornadoes are funnel shaped clouds that spin with low pressure acting like a vacuum causing damage. Tornadoes form over land.
Continue for the last question... Tornadoes occurs when warm and cold air meets.
In the troposphere, the layer of the atmosphere where weather occurs, what happens to temperature at altitude increases? As altitude increases in the troposphere, the temperature decreases.
How is the climate different on the leeward and windward side of a mountain? The Windward side would receive more rainfall and the Leeward side would be more dry and desert is more likely to be located on this side.
How does the pollution in cities affect climate? Pollution has carbon dioxide which makes the world warmer.
What factors affect vegetarian the most? Rainfall and temperatures are the climate factors that most affect vegetarian.
What does arid mean? It means dry.
Know the different layers of the atmosphere and what occurs in each? -
What kind of percentages of gases make up the air? 78% nitrogen and 21% of oxygen with small amounts of other gases. (.04% carbon dioxide and dust particles.)
What are the different types of chemical and mechanical weathering? -
What climate increases the rate of weathering? Hot and wet climates.
What causes global winds? High and low pressures.
How are winds named? They are named from where the wind direction came from.
What is the difference between radiation, conduction and convection? Radiation is movement of electromagnetic energy, convection is transferred through a liquid or gas in a circular motion, and conduction is transferred through matter by direct contact.
What happens to the solar radiation that comes toward Earth? 50% of solar radiation gets absorbed by Earth's surface, 30% of it reflects back to outer space, and 20% of it the clouds, air, and liquid absorbs.
How does deforestation change the gases in the atmosphere? Deforestation kills trees, and there is less tree to absorb the carbon dioxide, meaning more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
When and what is the difference between a land breeze and a sea breeze? Sea breeze occurs during the day and land breeze occurs during the night.
Continue for the last question... Sea breeze - Cold air over water blows toward land replacing warm air. Land breeze - Cold air over land blows toward water replacing warm air. Land heats and cools faster than water.
