Name the paranasal sinuses. | Frontal, macillary, sphenoid, and ethmoid cavites. |
What are the functions of the sinuses? | Hollow areas that make the skull lighter, give resonance to the voice. |
What is sinusitis? | Inflammation of the mucous membranes in the sinuses |
What is the function of the pharynx? | passageway for both air and food |
What is a common dysfunction of the pharynx? | Infection that can spread to the ear |
What is the function of the larynx? | Prevents food from entering the trachea and directs the food to the esophagus |
What is the function of the trachea? | Allows for expansion of the esophagus during swallowing while still maintaining patency of the trachea. |
What is a tracheostomy? | a surgical opening into the trachea through which an indwelling tube maybe inserted. |
Where does the lungs receive their blood supply from? | pulmonary arteries |
What is the normal range of respiration for an adult at rest? | 14 to 20 breaths/min |
What is the normal range of respiratin for a newborn? | 40 to 60 breaths/min |
What is the normal range of respiration for a teenager? | 20 to 22 breaths/min |
What areas of the brain are responsible for the basic rhythm and depth of respiration? | medulla oblongata and the pons |
What is sibilant wheezes? | Musical, high pitched, squeaking or whistling sounds, caused by the rapid movement of air through narrowed bronchioles |
What is the Pulmonary Function test? | Tests performed to assess the presence and severity of disease in the large and small airways |

What is PCO2? | Measure or the partial pressure of CO2 in the blood. PCO2 is referred to as the respiratory component in acid base determination, this value is primarily controlled by the lungs. As the CO2 levels increase the pH decreases |
Is PCO2 Increased or decreased in respiratory acidosis? | The PCO2 level is elevated in primary respiratoy acidosis and decreased in primary respiratory alkalosis |
How does the lungs react during metabolic alkalosis? Acidosis? | In metabolic acidosis the lungs attempt to compensate by "blowing off" CO2 to riase pH. In metabolic alkalosis the lungs attempt to compensate by retaining CO2 to lower pH |
What is Epitaxis? | Nose bleed caused by congestion of the nasal membranes, leading to capillary rupture, also caused by dryness, chronic infection, or trauma |
