QuestionAnswer
ACE Inhibitors *PRILS* Mech. of Action - Block angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)
Beta Blockers *OLOLS* Mech. of Action - Selective blockage of beta receptors, nonselective blockage of beta1 and beta2 receptors, block effects of the sympathetic division leading to vasodilation which decreases BP
Calcium Channel Blockers Mech. of Action - Block calcium channels in plasma membrane which causes vasodilation of arteriole which decreases BP
Diuretics Mech. of Action - Increase the amount of urine produced by kidneys which increases excretion of water and electrolytes which decreases blood volume which decreases BP
Others(SARTANS[Angiotensin Receptor Blockers]) Mech. of Action - Block angiotensin receptors in arteriole smooth muscle and adrenal glands
HMG-COA Reductase Inhibitors *STATINS* Mech. of Action - Highly effective at lowering LDL levels. Inhibits HMG-COA reductase enzyme which reduces cholesterol synthesis
Bile Acid Sequestrants Mech. of Action - Decrease LDL plasma levels/serum cholesterol levels. Forms insoluble compound with bile salts and increasing bile loss through stool. Bile normally recycled through liver and bowel. Increases oxidation of cholesterol to form bile
Nicotinic Acid Mech. of Action - Increases HDL and decreases LDL. Similar in action as bile acid sequestrants
Fibrin Acid Agents Mech. of Action - Increase HDL and Lowers triglycerides
Combination Drugs (STATINs + Nicotinic Acid) Mech. of Action - Combines actions of HMG-COA reductase inhibitors and Nicotinic Acid to increase HDL levels and decrease LDL and triglyceride levels
Nitrates Mech. of Action - Direct action on vascular smooth muscle causing it to relax
Cardiotonics (Digitalis) Mech. of Action - Increase strength or force of the contraction of the heart muscle and slow heart rate
