4th Grade Moon Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
axis An imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole through the center of the Earth
rotation The spinning of a planet or moon on its axis
revolution The time it takes for an object to travel completely around another object it orbits.
orbit The path one object takes around another object in space
tide The rise and fall of the water level of the ocean near the shore that is caused by the pull of gravity of the moon
sequence A pattern of events that always follow the same order
New Moon The phase of the moon when the side of the moon that is facing Earth is not reflecting light from the sun.
First Quarter The phase of the moon when only one side of the moon facing Earth appears to be reflecting light from the sun. The light is increasing.
Full Moon The phase of the moon when the side of the moon facing the Earth is fully reflecting light from the sun.
Last Quarter The phase of the moon when only half of the side of the moon facing Earth appears to be reflecting light from the sun. The light is decreasing.
