Geography:Chapter 2
Section 4: How Climate Affects Vegetation
Question | Answer |
---|---|
vegetation | plants that grow in an area |
tundra | an area of cold climate and low-lying vegetation |
canopy | the layer formed by the uppermost branches of the rain forest |
5 broad types of climate | tropical, dry, moderate, continental, and polar. |
verticle climate | The overal weather patterns of a region as influenced by elevation; the higher the elevation, the colder the climate. |
Great Plains | a region of the United States that supports grasslands and forests |
Arctic Circle | polar region with tundra vegetation |
The features that enable plants to live in their particular climate | adaptations |
What climate is found in the low latitudes and can either be dry or wet. | Tropical climate |
What type of vegetation can be found in tropical climates? | rain forests with thousands of kinds of plants, from tall trees to vines and ferns. |
What climate is arid and semiarid, is very hot and recevies very little rain? | dry climates |
What kind of vegetation can be found in dry climates? | sparse vegetation that grows far apart and has shallow roots. Some plants have small leaves and some plants only flower when it rains. Cacti also grow here. |
What type of climate is found in the middle latitudes? | Moderate climates |
What is the weather like in moderate climates? | There are seasonal changes, and temperatures hardly ever fall below freezing. |
What are the three types of Moderate Climates? | Mediterranean, marine west coast, and humid subtropical. |
What type of vegetation can be found in moderate climates? | A wide variety of decidious trees (ones that lose their leaves), shrubs, low bushes (scrub), wildflowers, and a variety of grasses. |
What is scrub? | Low bushes |
What type of climate has moderate to hot summers and cold to very cold winders. | Continental Climate |
What types of vegetation can be found in continental climates? | Either grasslands and forests,or short grasses and (sometimes)coniferous forests (trees that needles). Some subartic continental areas have shorter grass because it is cold and drier. |
Where are polar climates found? | Polar climates are found at high latitudes. |
What is the weather like in polar climates? | Cold all year round. Short, cold summers and long, even colder winters. |
What is the vegetation like in the polar climates? | No trees, low shrubs, mosses, lichens, and few flowering plants. |
What are lichens? | strange plants that grow on the surfaces of rocks |
Why is it so cold at the top of mountains? | A mountain is an example of vertical climate, where the climate changes according to the mountain's height. |
What climate region has the most varied vegetation? Why? | Moderate climates because the temperature is rarely freezing and rainfall is moderate. |
What do plants need to survive in a particular climate? | water, sunlight, and certain nutrients |
As you climb a mountain what will you notice? | It gets colder and drier and less and less vegetation can be supported. |
