ASCII American Standard Code for Information exchange (7bits/character- 128 characters
UNICODE= handles non-english languages and large numbers of characters (Chinese/Japanese) and special characters to be represented.
MICROPROCESSOR CHIPS= tiny ciricuit boards etched onto squares of sand-like material called silicon and are mounted on carrier packages
COMPONENT of MICRO-CHIP= control unit- directs the control signals b/w the CPU and input/output devices
CPU= (central processing unit) contains a single chip called a microprocessor
MULTI-CORE CHIPS= Parallel processing divides tasks into parts that can be distributed across each core.
RFID TAGS= RFID TAGS= information chips; used for tracking purposes, have been proposed as a means of tracking visitors as they enter or leave the US by put in passports
RAM= considered temporary or volatile storage
CACHE MEMORY= or RAM cache holds frequently- accessed information
FLASH= memory that offers a combination of the features of RAM and ROM
VIRTUAL MEMORY= computer does not have enough RAM to hold a program it might be able to run the program using virtual memory. Large programs are divided into parts and the parts stored on a secondary storage device, usually a hard disk. loaded into RAM only when needed.
BUS WIDTH= # of bits that can travel simultaneously down a bus. (what bus lines are measured by)
SERIAL PORTS= sent data one bit at a time and were good for sending information over long distances
HD MULTIMEDIA INTERFACE= provides high definition video and audio, making it possible to use a computer as a video jukebox or and HD video recorder
