HUNT - Literary elements

biography a person's life story written by someone else
climax turning point of the story/play to which the action leads
protagonist main character who faces a problem
antagonist character who poses a problem
bibliography a list of writings at the end of research
setting a place where a story takes place
narrator one who tells the story
fiction a piece of literature that is not true; false
nonfiction a piece of literature/writing that is true
characters those people/things that are of the literary work
opinion one's own personal beliefs/feelings (cannot be proven)
author's purpose the reason the writer/author created the literary work; to entertain, perform, analyze or inform the audience (readers)
predict to state what the reader thinks will happen next
poetry emphasizes a line as the part of composition (wrtiting) which may contain emotional, imaginative and a regular rhythm
figurative language words used to describe that express some truth beyond the literal use (similes, metaphors, personification)
imagery language in writing that uses the some or all of the 5 senses to understand the scenes
expository writing writing which aims to inform/explain (news articles/how-to papers/research)
genre a division of literature: the main ones are pose, poetry and drama
drama a writing designed for theatrical presentations
theme main idea/message of a piece fo writing
tone reflection of the writer's or speaker's attitude toward a subject
mood feeling or atmosphere of a piece of writing
simile figure of speech that compares two basically unlike things using "like" or "as"
metaphor figure of speech that compares with seemingly unlike things without using "like" or "as" Ex: He is a rock!
stanza group of lines placed together in a poem with a space between each individual set of lines
alliteration having the same initial (starting) sounds
autobiography the story of a person's life written by that person (him/herself)
hyperbole extreme exaggeration; Example: "mile high ice cream cone"
motivation drive; a need/desire causing someone to act
infer to come to a conclusion after looking at facts/circumstances; guess
synonym meaning "same"; a word meaning the same as another word (ill and sick)
antonyms words of opposite meaning (cold and hot)
summarize to tell/discuss the main points of a topic/writing; tying it all up
main idea big part/picture of the literature or story, major point of a writing or story
sequence of events an order of things that happen in a writing or story
personification giving something the qualities of a human being/person (to make a car talk - Cars Movie)
flashback to go back to an earlier memory in time
rhyme one or more words with the same sounds (car/tar)
repetition the act of repeating over and over
descriptive language that describes a scene, smell, etc. most often using adjectives (like imagery)
narrative a personal story
suffix an affix at the end of the word
analyze study/break down of information for better understanding
inform to tell something; make something known (one of the reasons for an author's writing)
