Asteroids, Comets, and Meteoroids

Ceres A supposed planet which was the first asteroid ever discovered
Asteroids Over 4,000 tiny worlds
Asteroid Belt A ring of asteroids located between Mars and Jupiter. Trojan and Apollo asteroids located outside of this.
Halley's comet The first comet ever discovered in 1682
Nucleus The core of a comet. Looks like a frozen chunk of ice and dust about the size of a small asteroid
Coma The gas and dust that form a cloud around the nucleus
Tail Dust particles and gases that are wafted away from the coma in a blazing streamer
Period The amount of time it takes a comet to complete an orbit
Encke's comet The comet that has the shortest orbit
Meteoroids Pieces of space debris that orbit the sun
Meteors Meteoroids that enter Earth's atmosphere
Meteor shower Occurs when the earth passes through a cluster of meteoroids
Meteorite Meteors that collide with the earth's surface
Johann Bode German Astronomer. Created Bode's Law
Bode's Law This law states that a planet should exist between Mars and Jupiter
Tycho Brahe Learned that a comet is a natural part of the solar system
Edmund Halley Known for correctly calculating the orbit of Halley's comet
A comet's course Comets orbit the sun as do the planet. Greater ellipse
Shooting star A meteor that burns up upon entering the earth's atmosphere
