I | Olfactory | Sense of Smell |
II | Optic | Transmits visual information to the brain |
III | Oculomotor | Controls most of the eye movements EOM |
IV | Trochlear | Rotates the eye away or down from the nose EOM |
VI (Note this is # VI not # V) | Abducens | Controls each eye's ability to move away from the midline EOM |
V | Trigeminal | Gives sensations to the face, chewing |
VII | Facial nerve | Controls facial expression and tast to 2/3 of the tongue, salivary glands |
VIII | Vestibulocochlear (auditory) | Senses sound (hearing), rotation and gravity (essential for balance and movement) |
IX | Glossopharyngeal | Controls various sensations, glands and muscles (gag) |
X | Vagus | supplies sensory parasympathetic fibers to nearly all internal organs (gag) |
XI | Accessory nerves (cranial accesory nerve or spinal accessory nerve) | Controls mucscles of the neck and overlaps with functions of the vagus (turn head side to side and shoulder shrug) |
XII | Hypoglossal | Controls most of the tongue muscles as wells as others (tongue forward - side to side) |
