Antiacid Neutralizes Acid
Antianxiety Relieves anxiety and muscle tention
Antiarrhythmic Contols cardiac arrhythmias
Anticholinergic Blocks parasympathetic nerve impulses
Anticoagulant Prevents or delays blood clotting
Anticonvulsant Prevent and relieves convulsion
Antidepressants Prevents or relieves the symptoms of depression
Antidiarrheal Prevents or relieves diarreha
Antidote Counteracts poisons and their effects
Antiemetic Prevents or relieves nausea and vomiting
Antifungal Destroys or inhibits the growth of fungus
Antihistamine Acts to prevent the actionof histamine
Antihypertensive Prevents or controls high blood pressure
Anti-inflammatory Prevents inflammation
Antilipemic Used to lower abnormally high blood levels of fatty subtances (lipids)
Antipyretic Reduces fever
Antitussive Prevent and relieves cough
Antiviral Combats a specific viral disease
Broncohodilator Dilates the bronchi
COX-2 inhibitor Inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-2). An enzyme found in joints and areas affected by inflammation.
Decongestant Reduces nasal congestion and or swelling
Emetic Used to induce vomiting
Expectorant Facilitates removal of secreation from broncho-pulmonary mucous
Gastric Acid pump inhibitor Supresses gastric acid secreation by specific inhibiton of the H+/K+/ ATPase enzyme system.
Laxitive Loosens and promotes normal bowel elimanation
Stimulants Drugs that increase cell activity
Depressants Drugs that decrease cell activity.
Agonist Action A drug has an affinity for the cellular receptor of other drug or natural subtance and initiates/produces a drug response.
Antagonist A drug binds to a cellular receptor for a hormone, neurotransmitter, or another drug blocking the action of that subtance without producing any drug effecting itself.
