Tools of Algebra

What is a number's additive inverse? Its opposite
What is an algebraic expression? mathematical phrase that can include numbers, variables, and operation symbols. Also called variable expressions.
What is an equation? a mathematical sentence that uses an equal sign
What is an open sentence? an equation that contains one or more variables
How do you simplify a numerical expression? you replace it with its simplest name
What is an exponent? tells how many times a number is used as a factor.
What is a base? The number being used as a factor in a power.
What is a power? has two parts, a base and an exponent
How do you evaluate an algebraic expression you substitute a given number for each variable/ Then simplify the numerical expression using the order of operations.
What is a natural number? a number above 0 that does not have a decimal or fraction
What is a whole number? a positive number (that includes 0) that does not have a decimal or a fraction.
What is an integer? Any number, positive or negative, that does not have a fraction or decimal.
What is a rational number? A number whose decimal, if any, terminates or repeats.
What is an irrational number? A number whose decimal does not terminate or repeat.
What is a real number? Any number known to mankind
What is a counterexample? Any example that proves a statement is false
What is an inequality? mathematical sentence that compares the value of two expressions using an inequality symbol.
What is a matrix? rectangular arrangement of numbers in rows and columns.
What is an element? Each item in a matrix
What is a term? a number, a variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables
What is a coefficient? numerical factor of a term
What are like terms they have the same variable factors
What is a scatter plot? graph that relates two sets of data
What is the commutative property of Addition? a+b=b+a
What is the commutative property of Multiplication? a*b=b*a
What is the associative property of addition? d+(e+f)=(d+e)+f
What is the associative property of multiplication? f*(g*h)=(f*g)*h
What is the identity property of addition? a+0=a
What is the identity property of multiplication? a*1=a
What is the Inverse Property of Addition? a+(-a)=0
What is the inverse property of multiplication? a * 1/a = 1
What is the Reflexive Property of Equality a number equals itself a=a
What is the Symmetric Property of Equality? If a=b, then b=a
What is the Transitive Property of Equality? If a=b and b=c, then a=c
What is the distributive property? a(b+c)= ab+ac
What is the Multiplication property of Zero? For every real number n*0=0
Multiplication property of -1 For every real number -1*n=(-n)
