Directional Terms AP Chapter 1

Lateral Side of Body
Ipsilateral On same side.
Contralateral On different sides
Proximal Closer to trunk
Distal Farther from trunk.
Midsagittal Vertical plane that separates left and right into perfect halves through midline.
Parasagittal Cut that separates left and right into UNEQUAL halves and does NOT pass through midline.
Transverse or Cross Cut that separates superior and inferior. (Top and bottom)
Frontal or Coronal Cut separating anterior from posterior.
Oblique Cut at a 45 degree angle. Rarely used.
Superior Toward the head or upper part of structure.
Inferior Away from head, or lower part of structure.
Anterior or Ventral Nearer to or at front of body.
Posterior or Dorsal Nearer to or at back of body.
Medial Nearer to the midline.
Intermediate Between two structures.
Superficial Toward or on surface of body.
Deep Away from the surface of the body.
Cranial Cavity Formed by cranial bones and contains brain.
Vertebral Cavity Formed by vertebral colum and contains spinal cord and beginnings of spinal nerves.
Thoracic Cavity Chest cavity; contains pleural and pericardial cavities and mediastinum.
Pleural Cavity Each surrounds a lung; the serous membrane of each pleural is the pleura.
Pericardial Cavity Surrounds the heart; the serous membrane of the pericardial cavity if the pericardium.
Mediastinum Region in the middle portion of thoracic cavity between medial walls of plural cavities; from sternum to vetebral column and from first rib to diaphragm.
Abdominopelvic Cavity Subdivided into abdominal and pelvic cavities.
Abdominal Cavity Contains stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, small intestine and most of large intestine. Serous membrane of abdominal cavity is called peritoneum.
Pelvic Cavity Contains urinary bladder, portions of large intestine, and internal organs of reproduction.
Parietal Membrane Bag-like structure that attaches to body walls. Lines body cavities.
Visceral Membrane Membrane fitting snugly against organ.
