sediment | small, solid pieces of material that come from rocks breaking down through weathering or erosion. |
igneous rock | Rock that forms from magma (intrusive) or lava (extrusive). |
crust | The rocky outer layer of the Earth. |
mantle | A thick layer of hot, solid rock beneath the Earth's crust. |
core | The dense circular area at the center of the Earth; made mostly of nickel and iron. |
lithosphere | A layer of cool, rigid rock that includes the upper part of the mantle and the Earth's crust. |
asthenosphere | A layer of softer, weaker rock that is below the lithosphere. It flows slowly. |
rock cycle | A series of processes (weathering, erosion, heat and pressure) that change rocks from one type to another. |
sedimentary rock | Rock that forms over time as sediment is squeezed and cemented together. |
metamorphic rock | Rock that has been changed by temperature or pressure. |
