Herbs II Weeks 7-8

Heat Phlegm, Cold Phlegm

QuestionAnswer
Clears Heat Phlegm and Calms the Shen. (Also great for Wind/Spasms) Dan Nan Xing (Pulvis Arisaematis cum Felle Bovis)
Transforms Phlegm/Softness Hardness. For nodules, goiter, fibroids. Also promotes urination (!!) and thus is good for leg qi edema. Either of the two seaweeds: Hai Zao (Hb Sargassum) and Kun Bu (Hb Laminariae seu Eckloniae)
For Heat Phlegm with Stomach heat and n/v The bamboo shavings!: Zhu Ru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniis)
Another one for Phlegm Heat nodules and diuresis. (But this is the C category "herb" we are unlikely to need to know.) Hai Fu Shi (Pumex)
Clears Phlegm Heat but MOISTENS THE LUNG!! So it is useful in diabetics, cancer patients, TB patients (if you ever see one). Can also do IM injection to abort a fetus :) Also said to Clear Toxic Heat. Tian Hu Fen (aka Heavenly Flower Powder)/Radix Trichosanthus
Think of BBC (Breast, Bowels, Chest) for this one: Lung/breast abscesses/sores, mastitis. Expands chest (also for chest pain/angina). And lubes the tubes. Gua Lou (Fructus Trichosanthus)
BBC but more C: Chest pain, fullness of chest, angina Gua Lou Pi (Pericarpium Tricosanthus)
BBC but more B: Really gets the bowel going Gua Lou Ren (Semen Trichosanthus)
This is getting tricky, 'cause this pair (Shell Mother from Szechuan and Shell Mother from Zhejaing) also says "moistens the Lung!!" and for Yin Xu (dry), acute cough. The Zhi one is better for lumps/nodules/growths. Chuan Bei Mu and Zhi Bei Mu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae and Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii)
Since it is only slightly Cold, it is "Often used in formulas for (Cold!)-Phlegm in the elderly"-- even though its primary indication is for Heat-Phlegm. Also Releases the Exterior/dispels Wind-Heat)! Redirects rebellious (Lung) qi down. Enters only Lung! Radix Peucedani/Qian Hu aka "Before the Barbarians"
Which COLD-PHLEGM herb means "Half Summer" and is so good for Phlegm it is often included in Heat Phlegm formulas as well. (Caution: don't get it confused with Heat Phlegm herb that is slightly cold and sometimes used in Cold-Phlegm formulas for elderly.) Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) aka "Half Summer"
Which Warm/Acrid/Toxic herb for Cold-Phlegm gets an A+ rating from Corma? Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) aka "Half Summer"
Which herb powerfully dispels Cold-Phlegm, directs rebellious (SP/ST) qi downwards to treat n/v, and even DISSIPATES NODULES? Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) aka "Half Summer"
Which Warm/Acrid/Toxic herb for Cold-Phelgm enters LU/SP/ST and can be used for Gastric Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)? (According to CF) Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) aka "Half Summer"
Which of our 2 Cold-Phlegm herbs is not only WAT but also Bitter and enters Liver for Wind? Tian Nan Xing (Rhizoma Arisaematis)
Which of our 2 Cold-Phlegm herbs dispels WIND-PHLEGM from the channels and so is good to treat numbness, paralysis? And has "strong anti-spasmodic properties?" The "Star of the Southern Heavens": Tian Nan Xing (Rhizoma Arisaematis)
