scrib/scrip and graph Lesson 5

Latin roots scrib/scrip means write/written/record
Greek root graph means write/written/record
postscript means something that is written after ending a letter – it’s another thought
prescription means a document that is written allowing someone to get medicine
geography means something written about places
geo means earth - so that is why geography means something written about places on earth
post means after - so a postscript then means something written after
autobiography means something self written about their own life
the prefix auto means self
the prefix bio means life - so therefore an “autobiography” naturally means a self written life
subscription means to order and pay for something on a regular basis such as magazines or newspapers. sub means below and script means write so you would "write" your name "below" on a document to subscribe.

paragraph means a piece of writing that is basically on one topic.
Greek root para means beside - so a paragraph would then be about words written and put beside one another about one topic
a scribe is a person who writes - in Ancient Egypt scribes were at the top of the social pyramid because they could write over 700 hieroglypic symbols and keep records for the Pharaoh and other high ranking officials
script can be a type of font, written text, something you read when studying to perform in a play, etc.
manu means hand - so a manuscript would be something written by hand
the suffixes ology/logy mean the study of - so then biology is the study of life
autograph means a signature or when someone writes their own "self" name - it can be a noun or a verb
biosphere means the part of the earth that contains life - sphere means "round"
geography study of features of different places on the earth
geo means earth
biography someone else write the life story of a person
biology the study of life/living organisms
