What is the structure of the poem? -8 Stanzas of 6 lines each -ababab/cdcdcd/... -Written in the form of a Ballad
Explain the theme, TORMENT -The slave dealer is haunted by the deeds he has commited -His torment, anguish, turmoil, and sadness are emph. by using emotive language
Explain the theme, SLAVERY -The horror of slavery is told through the personal experiences of the speaker who is a slave dealer -The speaker feels God will avenge the terrible cruelty inflicted by the slave dealers
Explain the theme, REMORSE -His guilty conscience plagues him because he was responsible for the slave woman's death -HE is filled with remorse for killing people and taking what is not his
How does the REMORSE theme link with Macbeth? Mc cannot pray after killing KD; he says the sea cannot wash the stain of KD's blood from his hands. This slave dealer repeats these ideas emph. his deep regret for the things he as done. Just like Mc, he feels alienated from God through his wrongdoing
