The Civil War Era

QuestionAnswer
Missouri Compromise An agreement that allowed Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state and Maine to enter as a free state and outlawed slavery in any territories or states north of 36⁰30’ latitude.
Sectionalism A devotion to the interests of one geographic region over the interests of the country as a whole.
Compromise of 1850 An agreement that allowed California to enter the Union as a free state and divided the rest of the Mexican cession into territories where slavery would be decided by the voters.
Fugitive Slave Act A law passed that made it illegal to help run-away slaves; it allowed slaves to be arrested in areas where slavery was illegal and required escaped slaves to be returned to their owners.
Kansas Nebraska Act A law passed that allowed voters in Kansas and Nebraska to choose whether to allow slavery.
Secede To formally withdrawal from the Union.
Border States Slave states that lay between the North and the South that did not join the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Emancipation Proclamation An executive order issued by President Lincoln that freed the slaves only in the Confederate States.
Battle of Gettysburg A Union Civil War victory that turned the tide against the Confederates at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Total War A type of war in which an army destroys its opponent’s ability to fight by targeting civilian and economic as well as military resources.
