The Civil Rights Era

QuestionAnswer
Segregation The forced separation of different races in public places.
Freedom Rides A series of integrated bus rides through the south.
Civil Rights Act of 1964 A law passed in 1964 that ended discrimination based on race or gender.
Voting Rights Act of 1965 A law passed in 1965 that provided new powers to the federal government to protect American Americans’ voting rights.
Sit-Ins A form of protest in which African Americans sat at segregated lunch counters and requested service.
March on Washington A huge demonstration organized by Martin Luther King Jr. to protest racial discrimination.
Little Rock Nine A group of nine African American students who began the integration of the Little Rock, Arkansas, public school system.
Plessy v. Ferguson The 1896 US Supreme Court case that established the “separate-but-equal” doctrine for public facilities.
Brown v. Board of Education The 1954 US Supreme Court case that ended segregation in public schools.
Montgomery Bus Boycott A boycott of the Montgomery, Alabama, public bus system to protest its policy of segregation.
