Tokugawa Shogunate limited trade with other countries. This is a "reverse trade embargo."
Economic system based on land contracts between landowners and vassals. Economy is based on farming.
These are groups determined by wealth, birth, and education/job.

Was the ritualistic leader of Japan. They were responsible for rituals and religious functions, but had no political power EXCEPT they choose the shogun. Japan has had only ONE imperial family. The emperor was seen as a divine figure.
Code of honor that emphasized loyalty to the death.
Ritualized self execution that a samurai or daimyo would commit (or have to commit) when they were ordered to or lost honor.
He established the Tokugawa shogunate, which would rule Japan for hundreds of years.
1600-1868: government of the shogun (military government) that attempted to cut off trade to the rest of the world and preserve Japanese feudal culture.
Process of developing manufacturing (mass production through factories)
Process of becoming like a western nation (U.S., Great Britain, France, Germany, etc), which lead to changes in military (rifles, cannons, etc), communication (telegraphy), travel (railways and trains), clothing (suits and hats), etc.
1868: the shogun resigns and the emperor gets back political power. Because his name was Meiji, this is known as the Meiji Restoration.
1937-1945: Japan invades deep into China, killing innocent civilians and conquering much of northern China. There are parallels to what the Japanese did to the Chinese and what many people experience in Europe under the Nazis.
1941-1945: Part of WWII which involves Japan fighting against the U.S., U.K., and China.
