atom a basic unit of matter and the smallest unit of an element

base a substance that can accept hydrogen ions in water and can neutralize an acid
catalyst a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction
chemical reaction a process in which one or more substances, the reactants, are converted to one or more different substances, the products
desalination heat water so that it evaporates into steam, leaving behind impurities, which then condenses back into a liquid for human use
polarity the distribution of electrical charge among the atoms connected by a chemical bond
mole a unit of measurement
adhesion a substance to interact with other substances because of intermolecular forces
atmosphere a unit of pressure equal to the average atmospheric pressure at sea level
atomic mass sum of the number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus
central atom the atom in the center of a molecule
coefficient the part of a number in scientific notation that is multiplied by a power of 10
degrees the unit of temperature scales
element a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler chemical substances by ordinary chemical means
frequency the number of cycles of light that pass a given point in one second
