Sun, Earth, Moon

QuestionAnswer
axis An imaginary line through earth's poles, leaving earth at a 23.5 degree angle.
ellipse The shape of earth's revolution around the sun.
orbit A planet or other object going around a star or larger object due to a gravitational pull.
revolution Earth's orbit around the sun.
rotation Earth's spinning motion around it's axis.
lunar eclipse An eclipse in where the earth is blocking all of the light reflecting off of the sun. In the night sky, the moon would be disappearing.
solar eclipse An eclipse in where the moon is in between earth and the sun, blocking the light. People on earth would see the sun disappearing until totality where the only thing that people would see would be the corona.
umbra The direct shadow during an eclipse.
puenubra The not - so - direct shadow the moon casts on the earth or the earth casts on the moon during an eclipse.
equinox When both hemispheres get the same amount of sunlight. Neither is nessiscarily warmer or colder.
solstice The longest or shortest days of the year. Entering summer / winter.
waxing Phases that are heading towards a full moon.
waning Phases that are heading towards a new moon.
new moon A phase of the moon in which no light reflects off of it onto earth.
full moon People on earth can see the whole near side of the moon because of the sun's light reflecting off of it in such a way.
first quarter A phase of the moon where from earth only the right side is lit up.
third quarter A phase of the moon where from earth only the left side is lit up.
gibbous A type of moon phase where people can see three - quarters from earth.
tides These are caused by the moon and the water level changes because of it's gravitational pull.
